I’m an experienced, friendly and highly-qualified private tutor in English and other Humanities subjects, as well as Oxbridge interview preparation. I hold first-class BA, MA and PhD degrees from the Universities of Oxford and London in English Literature. I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
I offer bespoke tuition tailored to each student’s needs and interests. I have tutored privately for a decade in English Language and English Literature (GCSE, AS and A Level) and History (GCSE, AS and A Level). I have successfully coached students for Oxbridge interview preparation and provided sessions on study skills, exam technique and coursework/essay structure. I have also lectured in English at the Universities of Sheffield, Manchester, London, Bath Spa, and elsewhere. I am a published poet and researcher, and the author of the award-winning academic monograph Poetry & Commons: Postwar and Romantic Lyric in Times of Enclosure (Liverpool University Press, 2022).
As a writer myself, I am passionate about what I do. I help students to develop and foster critical thinking, analytical habits of mind, and close reading and writing skills that will stand them in good stead throughout their lives. At the core of my approach is the enjoyment that comes from close attention to the nuances of language. It is central to my teaching philosophy that I guide students to develop in their own way, using their own words: I believe that the individual student’s understanding of how to read and think well is shaped by such personal engagement. I also hold that private tuition should strike a balance between expanding students’ horizons, having fun, and achieving excellent exam results.

“Dan is the best teacher/tutor I’ve ever had! Dan tutored me for A-Level English Literature; I was really struggling getting to grips with the subject, particularly the poetry of T. S. Eliot, which I found really complex and difficult. Dan enabled me to gain a deep understanding of Eliot’s poetry, to the extent that it became my strongest and most enjoyable subject! Dan’s lessons were always fun, engaging, interesting, and instructive; he is generous with his time, effort, and critical feedback.
